Socks + dating

You know when you have an old pair of socks that you just can’t get rid of? They look good at-a-glance, but after taking a closer look you can see the wear and tear on sole. Perhaps there’s no holes yet, but it’s only a matter of time. The problem is you have hope these socks will last a little bit longer. But you know they are well past their expiry date, and you’d die of embarrassment if a loved one saw you wearing them.

Dating a person who doesn’t meet your standards and treats you poorly is just like that old pair of socks. You know you gotta get rid of them, but you hold on with hope for better days. Or worse, as a security measure because you’re afraid you won’t be able to find a better replacement.

Perhaps it’s a comfort thing. Maybe you think you can get a few more wears out of them before the real holes come, but the bottoms are so worn, you can feel the cold floor on your skin. These socks and the relationship stopped serving their purpose awhile ago, yet for some reason, they’re still around, and you hope no one else will notice.

Anyway, it’s time to go separate ways. We have other socks, better socks, most of the time right in our drawer at home, and if not, there’s an abundance of socks at the store.

So take them old socks and send them to the trash, just like the relationship that doesn’t meet your standards.
